Tumpe, a 24-year-old female in the elephant herd at Disney's Animal Kingdom,
died on March 17 due to an illness. Tumpe had symptons including
gastrointestinal problems and skin sores for the last two months. A pathology
report will hopefully identify the cause of death, which Disney believes is an
isolated case not infecting the other 12 elephants on the safari.
Animal Kingdom vetrinary staff had provided extensive medical care in attempt to
alleviate or cure the condition.
Tumpe had arrived at the Animal Kingdom from the Riverbanks Zoological Park in
Columbia, South Carolina during October 2007.
